Blood Orange Granita with the benefits of Acai Berries

There is no fruit in nature that is quite so vibrant in colour as the acai. This fruity purple berry grows in the Amazon rainforest similarly to dates and its distinct taste is revered by Brazillians. Rich in essential fatty acids omega 6 and 9, this is a wonderful source of antioxidants and will have you glowing from the inside out. Freeze-drying is the best way of transporting it without depleting the nutrients too much. The powder can then go into smoothies, ice-creams, crackers and cookies, not only for the taste but to add a splash of colour too. This granita is a traditional Sicilian sweet with a raw twist. I used blood oranges to make it but if you can’t find any, normal oranges will do just fine.

Ingredients:
  • Juice of 6 oranges
  • Finely grated zest of 3 oranges
  • ¼ Cup of maple syrup
  • Half a cup of spring water
  • 1 large heaped teaspoon of açai powder
  • For the garnish – Peeled zest of 3 oranges
Method:

Whisk everything together pour into a container and put in freezer until set hard. Remove from freezer 10 minutes before serving and scrape the granita with a strong fork.

To garnish: peel the zest of 3 oranges and cut finely into strips. Dehydrate until crisp.
